Youth and the Manhattan Project

I had a shock this weekend. I was reviewing "Creating the New World" for the author (Ted Rockwell). I was surprised to learn that most of the scientists and engineers who worked on the Manhattan Project were in their 20s and 30s. Rockwell started at Oak Ridge at 21.

We get so used to the images of an aged Einstein (who actually did NOT work on Manhattan once he signed the famous letter to FDR) that we forget that it was an idealistic youth that did most of the actual work.

Youth impacts more than we think sometimes...

Insightful Workshop

Really learned from Gov Sununu at his workshop. He stressed the need to develop relationships with one's officials and being known as an expert in the particular issue. This way the official will contact YOU and ask questions. You become both a resource and an instrument of change.

There were other interesting concepts as well, but I don't want to post too large of an update.

Sununu Seminar

I have been invited to a seminar tomorrow on how engineers can be more efective politically. The speaker is John Sununu. He was Governor of New Hampshire back in the 80's and was also Bush Sr's Chief of Staff in the first two years. He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from MIT and currently is a lobbyist. His son is a Senator from New Hampshire. While he has always provoked controversy, I believe I can learn from his perspective.

Unfortunately, engineers do not seem to do well in politics in the US. This is sad because so much that is controversial in current affairs has strong engineering components, but engineers do not seem to be in any of the debates.

Tere O'Connor Dance

Tere O'Connor has done work with Baryshnikov through the White Oak Dance Project. He performed this weekend and I had a chance to see it. He was little more experimental for my taste, but the dances displayed a powerful physicality and skill.

Nice Reception

A nearby historical house had a very nice reception. It centered around a family from turn of the century Richmond. They were musicians and also loved photography. The exhibit captured a strong sense of life in Richmond post-reconstruction.

And as a bonus, the reception featured a variety of sandwiches, vegatables and fruits, and some yummy desserts. All of this made for a great afternoon.
